Located on the San Francisco Peninsula adjacent to San Francisco Bay, South San Francisco has about 64,000 residents, including more than 10,600 seniors aged 65 or older. Residents of this beautiful city by the Bay enjoy mild winters and dry, cool summers, with the western hills shielding them from much of the fog that plagues neighboring areas.

Like most places in California, the cost of living in South San Francisco is higher than the national average, but it comes with perks like cleaner air and low crime. The city doesn’t receive any snow, so seniors have reduced risks of falling on slippery sidewalks. Should they need medical care, South San Francisco has a higher than average number of physicians per capita and a high-performing Kaiser Permanente medical center.

Seniors may consider an assisted living community to live among their peers while receiving help with personal needs. Genworth’s 2021 Cost of Care Survey doesn’t list separate long-term care costs for South San Francisco, but it does include it with the San Francisco area. Seniors in this area can expect to pay an average of $6,319 for assisted living. While this is higher than the statewide average of $5,250, it’s lower than Santa Rosa’s average of $7,048 by more than $700.
