Situated in the eastern portion of southern California’s Riverside County in the Colorado desert’s renowned Coachella Valley, Indio is also known as The City of Festivals. We loved this facility's wide range of on-site activities, such as meeting friends at the campus pub, playing Wii sports, competing in a trivia competition, watching a movie at the on-site theater or enjoying a group outing to a community event. There's a variety of resident-led clubs to join, such as book clubs, gardening clubs and discussion groups. There are designated parking spots for guests, and they're welcome to join residents for meals and spend the night. Residents also have access to a private party space where they can host personal celebrations.

Bayshire Rancho Mirage

We included Bayshire Rancho Mirage on our top 10 list because we liked its mobile wellness, customized care plans and integrated app that keeps residents connected with friends and family. There are also five miles of beautifully landscaped grounds with walking paths and comfortable outdoor seating areas where residents and their pets can get plenty of fresh air and exercise or simply sit and soak up the sun. Other amenities include a heated pool and Jacuzzi, housekeeping, laundry and linen services, and staff on-site 24 hours per day.

Legend Gardens earned its place on our top 10 list because of its resident capacity of 42 combined with its home-like ambience. Special touches include separate residences situated around private courtyards, outdoor walking paths and inviting common areas. Private and shared suites are available with emergency call buttons in two or three locations within each unit. Residents can also request life-alert pendants. Pets are accepted on a case-by-case basis.

This facility made our top 10 list because of the range of available activities and amenities and its resort-like ambience. There are 20 acres of beautifully landscaped grounds designed to blend seamlessly with the stunning beauty of the surrounding desert and mountains, so residents and their pets have plenty of opportunities to enjoy fresh air and outdoor exercise. There's an on-site putting green, two swimming pools and cactus and rose gardens. Indoor amenities include a well-stocked library, a full-service salon/barbershop, a billiards and game room, a wellness center and an elegant dining room. The facility also has a private dining room for personal festivities and furnished guest apartments for visiting family and friends.

Pacifica Senior Living Palm Springs

Floor plans at Pacifica Senior Living include studio, one-bedroom and companion units. Residents have plenty of opportunities to engage in life-enrichment activities such as card games, group excursions to nearby events and attractions, fitness classes, movies, and arts and crafts projects. Besides assistance with personal grooming, bathing and dressing, services include incontinence management, dining assistance and mobility assistance. Diabetes management and wound care are also available. We also loved that this facility is all on one level, which eliminates the need for residents to navigate stairs and elevators.

Stonewall Gardens

This pet-friendly LGBT community has studio apartments as well as companion suites. Wellness services include diabetes management, medication reminders, incontinence care and special dietary menus. Staff can arrange in-house health care services, and the team is available 24 hours per day to provide assistance with bathing, dressing and routine personal grooming. With a resident capacity of just 35, this is the smallest facility on our list. We liked how this facility maintains a home-like setting without skimping on services.

Windsor Court Assisted Living

All rooms at this facility are equipped with emergency call systems in bedrooms and bathrooms, individual temperature controls, free Direct TV and phone jacks for private landline service. The restaurant-style dining room offers three professionally prepared meals per day, and there's an on-site '50s style diner with casual fare. Residents can request special meals at either of these venues. A private dining room is available for when family and friends come to visit.

Hallmark Palm Springs' unique Dog Care Program was the deciding factor in including this facility on our top 10 list. Residents don't have to worry about exercising or picking up after their canine companions because the program makes sure the needs of all dogs are met. We also liked the upbeat social activities available to residents, such as group shopping trips, cards and games, happy hours and art projects. There's a registered dietitian on staff to consult about individual dietary needs and preferences, as well as a full-time licensed vocational nurse.
