Located along the eastern shores of the San Francisco Bay, Berkeley is just 14 miles from San Francisco and has an idyllic but foggy climate. Berkeley’s mild year-round temperatures appeal to nature-loving seniors enjoying the proximity to beaches, mountains and forests. Summertime temperatures rarely get above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, with the average high around 72. Its pleasant winters have an average low of around 44, with zero snow or ice to slip on.

One drawback is Berkeley’s significantly higher cost of living. It’s higher than both the state and national averages, but the primary impact is housing. Berkeley’s housing costs are five times higher than the national average. Seniors in assisted living typically aren’t buying houses. They do benefit from California not taxing Social Security income, stretching their retirement dollars.

Berkeley is home to around 117,000 people, with more than 18,000 seniors aged 65 or older who may benefit from the supportive environment of assisted living. The average cost of assisted living in Berkeley is relatively high at $6,319 per month. It’s higher than California’s average of $5,250 but typical for the area. Santa Rosa’s average monthly cost is $7,048.
