Turlock is a city in Stanislaus County with a population approaching 73,000. The 2020 Census records 13.4% of its residents as being aged 65 and older, which is a little below the national average. Families considering the area for loved ones will find its climate to be among California’s more senior-friendly and its health cost index to be better than the U.S. average, too.

Turlock’s crime rates are above the country’s norm, although concerned families should know assisted living facilities typically include security systems as a standard. California taxes retirement incomes and pensions, but not Social Security. However, Turlock’s average cost of living is significantly below California’s, so residents here may find that they hold on to more of their income than their peers across the state.

Genworth’s 2021 Cost of Living Survey records Turlock’s median fee for assisted living as $4,000 per month. This is below the U.S. average of $4,500 and significantly lower than California’s $5,250. Comparisons with nearby cities vary from higher to lower. For example, San Jose’s is $6,000, Merced shares Turlock’s median fee and Stockton is a more affordable $3,649.

Note: Data for Turlock was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Modesto, was used instead.
