Castro Valley is a quiet community overlooking Oakland and the flatlands around East Bay. This hilltop community has a farmers’ market, public golf and many other senior-friendly attractions.

More than 66,000 people call Castro valley home, and just over 17% are seniors aged 65 and over. Many are retired tech professionals from nearby universities. They enjoy cool summers and snow-free winters, an exceptionally low crime rate and extensive public services including multiple senior centers. Castro Valley has a cost of living that’s nearly double the national average, but utility bills are surprisingly low, at just 93% of the national average. 

Castro Valley is close to prestigious hospitals, including UCSF and Stanford Medical Center, which offer emergency care and senior health services, and accept Medicare and Medicaid.

The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey puts the average cost for assisted living in Castro Valley at $6,319 per month, higher than both the $4,500 national average and the $5,250 average cost in California. It is, however, $729 less than the $7,048 per month paid in nearby Santa Rosa.
