On average, assisted living costs $3,350 per month, which is slightly less than the state average of $3,500 per month and the national average of $4,000 per month. Home care and adult day health care services are also more affordable here.
Nursing home care is relatively expensive in this city, however. The average senior pays $8,699 per month for a semi-private room, compared to the statewide median of $8,152 and the national median of $7,441 per month.

Of the major cities surveyed, West Palm Beach is among the most affordable for assisted living. On average, seniors pay $3,350 per month for this level of care, which is about $150 below the statewide average ($3,500). More affordable care is found in Lakeland, where assisted living services cost an average of $2,808 per month, and Orlando, where costs average $3,275 per month. Seniors residing in Cape Coral, Gainesville, Jacksonville, Palm Bay and the state capital city of Tallahassee generally pay more for assisted living services.
West Palm Beach seniors pay $3,337 per month on average for home care homemaker services, which is among the lowest of surveyed cities. This figure assumes 44 hours per week of care at an hourly rate of $17.50. This is about $460 lower per month than the statewide average of $3,804. Of the cities surveyed, Orlando and Tallahassee were among the most expensive for home care, with services averaging over $4,000 per month. Comparably priced home care services are found in the city of Lakeland, where seniors also pay an average of $3,337 per month.
Adult day health care costs a little over $50 less in West Palm Beach than in the state as a whole, with average monthly costs coming in at just over $1,400 per month. More affordable care can be found in the cities of Gainesville, Lakeland, Tallahassee and Orlando. In the cities of Cape Coral and Jacksonville, seniors generally spend more for adult day health care services.
Nursing home care costs in West Palm Beach are among the highest in the state, with seniors paying an average of nearly $8,700 per month for semi-private rooms. This is nearly $550 higher than the statewide monthly average. Every city surveyed in this guide has this level of care at a lower cost, with Jacksonville coming in as the most affordable city for nursing home care services at $7,118 per month.
Seniors in West Palm Beach who meet income and asset restrictions may qualify for financial assistance for senior care services through the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care Program. This program consists of two parts, including Managed Medical Assistance and Long-Term Care.
At the time of enrollment, applicants are required to select the plan that best fits their needs. Those who require long-term care services, including nursing home level care, must apply for the LTC plan. This plan pays for care administered in a nursing home, assisted living facility or a private residence, as well as other services like adult day health care and transportation services.
To be eligible for SMMC, applicants must be legal Florida residents and meet the financial requirements for Florida Medicaid. As of 2019, individuals must have an annual income of less than $16,040, and couples can have a combined annual income of no more than $21,599. Applicants must be at least 65 years old or at least 18 and designated as disabled by the Social Security Administration, and they must require nursing facility level of care. Optional State Supplementation (OSS)
West Palm Beach residents who reside in an adult care home, an assisted living facility or a mental health residential treatment facility may be eligible to receive financial assistance through the Florida Optional State Supplement program. This program, which is managed by the Florida Department of Children and Family, provides a cash benefit to qualifying individuals or their legal guardians that may be used toward room and board expenses.
To be eligible for OSS, an applicant must be aged 65 or older and a U.S. citizen that is a legal Florida resident. As of 2019, individuals may have a monthly income of up to $849.40 and have up to $2,000 in resources. Couples who both reside in a facility may have a monthly income of up to $1,698.80, and the resource limit is $3,000.
Community Care for the Elderly (CCE)
Florida Community Care for the Elderly provides financial assistance to West Palm Beach seniors who are at risk for nursing home placement but are not qualified to receive financial assistance through Medicaid. Some services that CCE covers include shopping assistance, case management and assistance with daily living activities. Program participants self-direct their care, meaning that they can choose their own caregiver.
To be eligible for this program, applicants must be Florida residents and 60 years of age or older. They must have a functional impairment and require assistance with the activities of daily living, such as bathing, grooming and mobility. While there are no upper income limits for this program, seniors must make enough to be ineligible for Medicaid. As of 2019, Medicaid's annual income limits are $16,040 for individuals and $21,599 for couples.

Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative (ADI)
Alzheimer’s Disease Initiative is an entitlement program that provides an array of supports for West Palm Beach residents with Alzheimer’s disease and their families and caregivers. Some services provided through this program include respite care, both in-home and facility-based, counseling for caregivers and case management.
Eligible applicants are at least 18 years of age and have been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia. While this program does not have income restrictions, an applicant’s income may affect their placement position on the program's waitlist.
Home Care for the Elderly (HCE)
The Home Care for the Elderly program provides financial assistance to West Palm Beach caregivers who care for low-income seniors, either in their own homes or in the homes of the one for whom they provide care. The program provides two different types of payments, including Basic, which helps with living expenses like food and clothing, and Special, which helps cover medical equipment and services. As of 2019, the basic subsidy averaged $106 per month per household.
To qualify for the HCE program, the applicant must be a Florida resident, at least 60 years old and at risk of nursing home placement. Their annual income may be up to $2,313 per month for an individual and $3,471 per month for a couple. The asset limit for this program is $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. Additionally, they must have an approved adult caregiver who is willing and able to provide or arrange for care to be provided. Those who qualify for Supplemental Security Income, Qualified Medicare Beneficiary or Specified Low-Income Medicare Beneficiary automatically qualify for HCE.
