Financial Assistance Programs in Altamonte Springs

Medicaid Program in Altamonte Springs

Medicaid helps millions of Americans gain access to free or low-cost medical goods and services, as well as nursing home care and basic in-home services. Although it was created by the federal government, it's managed at the state level, therefore various additional benefits may be offered.

In Florida, most Medicaid recipients receive services through a health plan of their choosing as part of the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care program. The SMMC is particularly useful for seniors and people with disabilities, as it provides more long-term care options.

The SMMC program covers a wide range of medical services, such as care received from doctors, hospitalization, mental health treatment and emergency services. If qualified for the Long-Term Care part of the SMMC, recipients are eligible to receive care in an assisted living facility or have additional support provided in their own home. Long-Term Care eligibility requires that individuals meet the criteria for nursing facility care.

Applicants for the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care program must be aged 65+ or disabled, a legal resident of Florida and within the specified financial limits. As of 2019, an individual applicant is permitted to have an income up to $2,313 per month, and non-exempt assets up to $2,000. Married couples are permitted an income up to $4,626 per month and assets up to $3,000.

Medicaid recipients are entitled to receive all approved services immediately upon confirmation of their eligibility for the requested services; there is no limit on the number of recipients.Apply for Medicaid and check eligibility for the SMMC by using the ACCESS Florida website. Call (866) 762-2237 for help using the website. Altamonte Springs residents can also visit the DCF Seminole County Access Center at 225 Harvest Time Drive in Sanford.

Other Financial Assistance Programs in Altamonte Springs

Home Care for the Elderly (HCE)

The HCE program is for seniors (60+) who are living in their own home or with a caregiver, and who need assistance paying for in-home care.

Home Care for the Elderly is a monthly subsidy with a set limit on how much will be paid, as opposed to other programs that directly cover services. As of 2019, the basic monthly subsidy is $106, and it is given to all who are approved for HCE to help cover the cost of support. Some recipients may also be authorized to receive a special subsidy, which is to be used for medical supplies, home modifications and in-home nursing.

Applicants for this program must be at least 60 years old, living with an approved caregiver and considered at risk of institutionalization. They must also meet the financial criteria for Medicaid.

Apply for Home Care for the Elderly by contacting a nearby Area Agency on Aging. Altamonte Springs is served by the Senior Resource Alliance AAA. Call the Elder Helpline on (800) 963-5337 to ask about the program and to start applying for services.

More information about the benefits of HCE is available in our Florida Home Care for the Elderly guide.

Community Care for the Elderly (CCE)

The CCE program is another initiative from Florida's Department of Elder Affairs that is designed to help seniors (60+) remain independent and outside of nursing facilities, and to save taxpayer money that would ultimately be spent on such facilities.

Community Care for the Elderly isn't available for recipients of Medicaid Long-Term Care coverage. However, the LTC plan covers a similar set of benefits.

Services covered through the CCE program include light housework, supervision and transportation to appointments, in-home nursing, assistance with activities of daily living and medical supplies.

Apply for CCE services by contacting the Senior Resource Alliance, which is the local agency partnered with the state to manage applications. Call (800) 963-5337 and speak to the Elder Helpline staff about eligibility and how to arrange the initial assessment.

Further details on the Community Care for the Elderly program can be found in our Florida CCE guide.

Respite for Elders Living in Everyday Families (RELIEF)

This program provides additional respite for caregivers, on top of the respite care available through other programs, and it's designed to allow seniors to remain as independent as possible while living with loved ones.

Respite for Elders Living in Everyday Families is managed by Florida's Department of Elder Affairs, and it's available statewide.

Respite care is provided in the home of the individual, which allows the primary caregiver to get out of the house and handle other issues, or simply take some time for themselves to do whatever they wish. These respite sessions may occur in the evening or on weekends and may last for up to four hours at a time.

Altamonte Springs residents can contact the Senior Resource Alliance AAA to ask about the RELIEF program and apply for services, or call the Elder Helpline at (800) 963-5337.

Read more about respite options available in our Florida RELIEF guide.

Alzheimer's Disease Initiative (ADI)

Florida's Department of Elder Affairs created the Alzheimer's Disease Initiative to provide more respite for caregivers. It is similar in purpose to the RELIEF program, although it only serves people with memory-related disorders, and it covers a wider range of services.

The ADI can also provide respite for much longer periods of time — up to 30 days concurrently, whereas most other programs measure respite in hours. Respite may be provided in the home of the individual, adult day care center or other suitable facility depending on the length of stay.

Aside from respite, this program may also provide partial coverage for medical goods, and it provides training and support for caregivers and other family members.

Contact the Senior Resource Alliance, which is the agency responsible for Altamonte Springs and Seminole County as a whole, to begin the application process for the ADI. Call (800) 963-5337 for the Elder Helpline.

Read more about this respite program in our Florida ADI guide.

Optional State Supplementation (OSS)

Seniors and people with disabilities in Altamonte Springs who receive Supplemental Security Income payments every month may qualify for an additional cash payment in the form of Optional State Supplementation. This supplement is intended to partially cover the room-and-board fees associated with mental health, foster care and assisted living facilities.

The OSS payment is combined with the regular monthly SSI payments, so it's possible an individual has already been granted the supplement and isn't aware of it. This monthly payment is an entitlement, although it's quite small and can't be used with Medicaid-funded assisted living. As such, it's generally unsuitable except for those who can't qualify for long-term care as part of the Statewide Medicaid Managed Care program.

Apply for the Optional State Supplement by submitting the necessary forms at ACCESS Florida. Call (866) 762-2237 for assistance using the website.Read more about how this payment works in our Florida OSS guide.
