Area Agency on Aging (AAA) for Southwest Florida  (239) 652-6900 The Area Agency on Aging for Southwest Florida is a regional nonprofit organization serving those aged 60 and over. It’s the Aging and Disability Resource Center for the Venice region and has information and referral specialists who help older adults connect with services such as prescription drug assistance, legal aid, volunteer opportunities and long-term care options counseling. The AAA also has a long-term care ombudsman program that seniors can contact for information on their rights as assisted living residents and help with resolving issues such as billing errors and substandard care.
Florida SHINE  (800) 963-5337  SHINE is a statewide program that provides free health insurance options counseling for seniors, which may help them find ways to pay for long-term care. It stations its counselors throughout the state. They provide in-person and over-the-phone help with understanding the Medicare program and private Medicare alternatives, Medicaid eligibility and long-term care insurance policies.

Legal Aid of Manasota helps those aged 60 and over apply for public benefits that may reduce their out-of-pocket assisted living expenses, including Medicaid, with the Long-Term Care Program to cover assisted living services for qualifying individuals. The office can also help resolve age-related issues such as assigning powers of attorney and drafting simple wills.  
Senior Friendship Center

Senior Friendship Centers are nonprofit centers that provide social and recreational programming for older adults throughout a four-county region. At the Friendship Center in Venice, members participate in educational classes, dances, congregate meals and table games. The center is open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and serves lunch between 12:30 p.m. and 1 p.m. It requires membership for participation, but full and partial scholarships are available.
