Situated on Florida’s west coast, slightly over an hour’s drive from Tampa, Hernando offers a greater-than-average number of sunny days, a low cost of living compared to both Florida and national averages and an active, engaged retiree population. Hernando is a small yet diverse city with plenty of shopping, dining and entertainment options available.

Slightly more than 35% of Hernando’s overall population of approximately 9,300 citizens is aged 65 or over. Hernando Area Senior Program provides low-cost activities for local seniors. Hernando is also home to several excellent golf courses and has plenty of freshwater rivers, nature preserves and other green spaces for outdoor recreation.

According to Genworth’s 2021 Cost of Care Survey, the average cost of assisted living in Hernando is $4,250 per month. This is several hundred dollars less than the national average of $4,500 and $250 higher than Florida’s statewide average.
