Available activities include movies, bingo, discussion groups, exercise classes and planned outings to nearby shopping centers, restaurants and community events and attractions. Resident parking is available, and there is a security gate for added safety. Case management specialists are on-site to serve as liaisons between residents, family members and health care providers.
The Bristal Assisted Living
The resort-like ambiance of The Bristal is displayed in the restaurant-style dining room and on-site bistro, where snacks and beverages are available all day. Its individualized service plans provide customized care around each resident's needs and preferences. Staff is available around the clock, and each apartment is equipped with an emergency call system.
Amber Court of Westbury
With a 225-resident capacity, Amber Court of Westbury is one of the larger facilities on our top 10 list. Floor plans include studio and one-bedroom apartments equipped with Wi-Fi and cable. Companion suites are also available. Residents can get their hair cut and styled at the on-site salon/barbershop, enjoy a yoga or tai chi session, attend an on-site religious service or join their peers for an arts and crafts project. A nurse is on staff, as well as an on-site pharmacy.
Sunrise of East Meadow
This faith-based facility offers studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments as well as companion suites. All units are equipped with kitchens or kitchenettes and cable emergency call systems and are wired for internet service. What we like best about Sunrise of East Meadow is its dedication to keeping family members engaged in its residents' lives. Its family engagement app lets loved ones view photos and videos, check out the activities calendar and read community announcements any time. The facility also offers social and educational programs for residents' family members. Small pets are welcome.
Sunrise of Glen Cove
Sunrise of Glen Cove earned its place on our top 10 list because of its dining options for residents. Along with a restaurant-style dining room, where a skilled culinary staff prepares meals and desserts from scratch, there is also a 24-hour bistro, where residents can enjoy light snacks and beverages anytime. Puréed meals are available as well, and it happily accommodates dietary restrictions and preferences. Additionally, all floor plans, from studios to two-bedroom apartments, come with kitchens or kitchenettes so residents can prepare snacks and meals themselves if they are in the mood to stay in.
Rosewood on the Sound
Rosewood on the Sound is among the smallest communities on our top 10 list, with a resident capacity of just 46. All units are studio apartments, each with Wi-Fi and cable. We liked the range of activities the staff provides, which include book clubs, arts and crafts, group outings, social hours, movie nights and live entertainment. However, we were especially impressed with how this facility organizes scenic cruises for its residents. This facility also does not allow pets, making it a good option for those with allergies.
Sunrise of Plainview
Sunrise of Plainview offers pet-friendly studio and one-bedroom units with kitchenettes, alarm systems and in-room cable. We liked how this facility makes it easy for family and friends to visit — there is plenty of guest parking, and guests are welcome to join residents for meals and spend the night. Residents also have a private dining and party room where they can host private festivities for their family and friends.
The Regency Assisted Living
We chose this facility for our top 10 list because we really liked the thoughtful design of the spacious floor plans, especially the alcoves in the studio units and cozy touches such as plush wall-to-wall carpeting. In-room intercoms make it easy for residents to contact staff when necessary, and the front desk is manned 24 hours per day, seven days per week. A pharmacy is on-site for residents' convenience, and transportation is available to medical and dental appointments.
Sunrise of Huntington
With a 110-resident capacity, we felt that this community was just the right size for those seeking a happy medium between getting lost in the crowd of a large facility and not having enough friends and activity partners in a small facility. Pet-friendly floor plans include studio and one- and two-bedroom units, with companion suites available upon request. We liked the comfortable outdoor seating areas where residents can relax with a book or visit with friends, but our favorite thing about this facility is its resident dog and cat so that those without their own pets can still enjoy the company of animals.
The Bristal Assisted Living at East Meadow
We liked this facility's chef demos in the country club-style kitchen, diverse activities calendar and roomy floor plans with luxury finishes in each unit. But what really made us take notice was the signature programs for both staff and residents. Staff members receive comprehensive sensitivity training to help them understand the challenges and complexities residents regularly face, while residents can reduce their risk of falling and consequent injuries by participating in the Mobility Enhancement Program. This program is highly individualized to address each person's unique fall risks.
