This family-owned facility provides a warm, friendly environment that offers individual care and support. Although this facility is pet-free, pet visits are on the activities calendar. Other activities include live entertainment, daily coffee socials, weekly happy hours, games and arts and crafts. There is a wellness center on-site, as well as a beauty salon/barbershop and a computer lab. Residents can choose reading material from a library cart, participate in resident-led special interest groups or join the resident council to play an active role in how the facility operates.

Park Terrace at Radisson

This pet-friendly facility offers studio apartments with in-room cable and personal emergency call systems. On-site amenities include an ice cream parlor, library, a coffee shop, a beauty salon/barbershop and a restaurant-style dining room that serves three meals per day plus snacks and beverages. We really liked the walking trails and the comfortable outdoor seating areas surrounding the facility where residents and their pets can get fresh air and exercise.

McHarrie Life Senior Community

We were enchanted by this facility's enclosed courtyards, gazebo and well-landscaped yard and garden area. We also liked the private dining room where residents can host personal celebrations with friends and family and the beautifully presented meals served in the restaurant-style dining room. Services include assistance with personal care, housekeeping, personal laundry, linens and household maintenance. Residents can participate in arts and crafts projects, join others for on-site happy hour, attend an on-site religious service and enjoy Zumba or tai chi.

Brookdale Liverpool

We liked the secure environment Brookdale Liverpool provides with emergency alerts in each room, daily check-in systems, 24-hour security and keyless entry. Modern conveniences include Wi-Fi throughout, concierge service and an on-site clinic. There is an arts and crafts studio, a theater, a billiards room and a fitness center. This facility is pet-friendly and surrounded by scenic walking paths. Floor plans include studio and one-bedroom apartments with plenty of natural light, kitchens or kitchenettes and ample storage space.

The Hearth at Greenpoint

Floor plans at this facility include a pet-friendly studio and one- and two-bedroom units. The resident capacity here is 186, which we thought was a good balance for those who enjoy meeting a lot of people but don't want to become overwhelmed by crowded conditions. There is a fitness room where residents can exercise to stay in shape, an on-site salon and barbershop and a restaurant-style dining room. What we liked best about this facility was the person-centered approach to care.

Camillus Ridge Terrace

This family-owned and -operated facility offers private suites with full bathrooms and kitchenettes. There is an on-site ice cream parlor where residents can enjoy sweet treats and beverages and a putting green where they can practice their golf swings. The facility also holds happy hours with live entertainment and a wide range of games, including scavenger hunts, bingo and trivia. It also hosts an annual classic car show and plenty of holiday-themed events and activities.

Buckley Landing

This facility is one of the few on our top 10 list that doesn't allow pets, so it's a good choice for those with allergies to pet dander or who would simply rather not be around domestic pets. We also liked the common spaces, such as the relaxing patio in front, the landscaped courtyards and the cozy lounges scattered throughout the building. Skilled nursing and medication management are available here.

The Hearth on James has a resident capacity of 71, allows pets and offers studio and one- and two-bedroom units. Companion suites are not available here. Residents have a range of activity options to choose from, such as art projects, group outings to community attractions and events, fitness classes, movies, games and religious services. It provides scheduled transportation to local appointments and shopping venues regularly. This facility offers physical and occupational therapy.

Brookdale Bellevue

Residents of this pet-friendly facility have access to an on-site beauty salon/barbershop, a clinic, a therapy room and a general store. A party space is available for private festivities, and the facility regularly provides transportation to local medical offices, banks, pharmacies and retail stores. One of the things we liked best about Brookdale Bellevue was the facility's monthly family parties.
