Brevard is a community that sits at the entrance of Pisgah National Forest, providing seniors with a naturally beautiful setting for their retirement. Its historic downtown and mountain views are a perk for active seniors who enjoy nature. It is also within 30 miles of Hendersonville, a larger city with health care and entertainment options, including AdventHealth Hendersonville and Pardee Hospital.

Seniors who retire to Brevard benefit from the small size of the community. Even though it only has 7,755 residents, over 30% of those residents are seniors age 65 and older. A cost of living that is close to national averages, with low costs for housing and transportation, is part of the appeal of this community. It also boasts a mild climate and low violent crime rates.

Though the cost of living is lower than average in Brevard, the average cost for assisted living is not. The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey estimates a median cost of $4,998 for assisted living care here, which is higher than the national average of $4,500. It is nearly $1,000 more than the state’s average as well. The lower cost of living helps offset this average cost.

Note: Data for Brevard was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Asheville, was used instead.
