Winder is a Barrow County city 30 minutes west of Athens. Although small, it boasts a thriving community with a theater and a diverse range of restaurants and stores. Fort Yargo State Park is on the outskirts, and there are several more within the city, giving seniors many opportunities to enjoy the beautiful outdoors.

Seniors comprise a below-average 12.3% of Winder’s almost 18,400 residents. The region’s climate is one of the state’s best, with relatively mild temperatures in winter and pleasantly warm summers. Rainfall is above the norm, which sometimes causes muggy days in summer, but it’s also responsible for the beautiful landscape and the above-average water quality. Winder’s health care is capably handled by Northeast Georgia Medical Center, a 56-bed facility which specializes in many ailments common to seniors, such as heart disease and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Assisted living is another form of care capably handled in Winder. According to Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the median monthly fee is $3,893, which is costlier than Georgia’s average of $3,535, but more affordable than the country’s $4,500.
