Lynchburg is a small, historic college town located along the banks of the James River, with Blue Ridge and Appalachian mountain views. With its lower cost of living, picturesque scenery and retirement tax breaks, it’s no wonder Lynchburg was ranked 10th happiest city for retiring in good health.

Lynchburg’s proximity to the mountains and water make it an ideal spot for active seniors looking to enjoy golfing, hiking, fishing or canoeing. There are many low-key entertainment options as well, including shopping the historic downtown or visiting the must-see Lynchburg historical sites. These include the American Civil War Museum, where seniors can learn about the lives of those involved in the Civil War and view time-period artifacts such as General Lee’s military sword and uniform. You can also enjoy hunting for antiques or taking in a live show at the Academy Center for the Arts.

The average monthly cost for assisted living in Lynchburg is $4,450, which is higher than the national average of $4,000 but slightly less than the state average of $4,800. This cost will also vary depending on the individual facility and its amenities.
