Herndon is a Fairfax County town within the Washington Metropolitan Area, about 40 minutes from the capital’s downtown. It has an urban and suburban feel, with plenty of restaurants, coffee shops, parks and a historic district. Seniors who enjoy the arts may like the town’s many cultural attractions, such as an art gallery and a theater company.

Just over 10% of Herndon’s 24,700 residents are aged 65+, which is below the norm but doesn’t mean the town isn’t senior-friendly. Property and violent crime is significantly lower than the national averages, which may reassure families who can’t visit loved ones regularly. Medical care is one of Herndon’s most attractive qualities, as there are almost a third more Medicare-registered physicians than normal and several hospitals, including the highly regarded Reston Hospital Center.

Seniors are also well-served by the region’s assisted living communities. According to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, a resident will pay around $5,948 per month in Herndon. This likely reflects its proximity to the capital because Virginia’s average is a much lower $5,250, while the country’s is around $4,500.

Note: Data for Herndon was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Washington, D.C., was used instead.
