Hermitage is a Mercer County city on the Ohio border, about 30 minutes northeast of Youngstown. Seniors wanting to escape more densely packed cities might appreciate its suburban feel and strong sense of community. Families may also like the convenience of its location, as the journey times to Pittsburgh and Cleveland are only 70 and 85 minutes, respectively.
Seniors comprise almost 27% of the 16,230 residents who make up Hermitage’s population, which is about 10% more than the national average. Its appeal to seniors can be explained by the low cost of living, helping seniors’ dollars stretch further, and the low rates of violent crime, generating a greater sense of safety. Older residents may also appreciate the proximity of two hospitals — UPMC and Sharon Regional Medical Center — and the adequate number of Medicare-registered physicians.
According to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, the median monthly fee for assisted living in Hermitage is $4,738. This is significantly more than Pennsylvania’s average of $4,100, although closer to the country’s $4,500.

Garden Way Place
Garden Way Place sits within well-tended lawns close enough to Hermitage's busiest streets to make them easily accessible but far enough away to not be disturbed by the traffic. It's also surrounded by numerous medical care providers and it's only a short walk to the shopping center and the picturesque Hillcrest Memorial Park. The community's residents receive 24/7 personal care services, such as assistance with bathing and dressing, and there's a registered nurse available round the clock. There are studio and one-bedroom apartments, each with kitchenettes and private bathrooms. The social side of the community includes daily exercises, arts and crafts classes, bowling and music programs.
Ridgewood at Shenango Valley
Ridgewood at Shenango Valley rests among landscaped grounds backed by woodland. We've added it to our list because it's a beautiful and peaceful location that's also very convenient as UPMC Horizon Pain Management Center is within walking distance. Residents can choose from three styles of one-bedroom apartments, all including kitchenettes, bathrooms and plenty of closet space. The community encourages family involvement, annually hosting family picnics and a strawberry festival to encourage greater engagement, while all year round there's a full calendar of social, recreational and spiritual activities.
Saint John XXIII Home
Saint John XXIII Home's proximity to the Shenango Valley Freeway makes it more accessible for visiting loved ones, while its acres of landscaped ground keep it far enough away to not be disturbed by traffic noise. Staff helps residents struggling with daily living tasks, such as bathing and showering, and there's 24-hour nursing care available to those that need it. The staff also manages medications, so families concerned about this aspect of care may feel reassured. For relaxation, residents can choose between the comfortable lounge and the shaded patio area.
Canfield Place is surrounded by well-tended lawns sheltered by mature trees. It's in a peaceful residential area, which may appeal to seniors who don't appreciate the proximity of conveniences that attract lots of visitors, such as shopping centers. Canfield Place's amenities are many, and some are unique, such as its man cave, where male residents can socialize together. It also has more traditional attractions, including a theater, and many options for residents to enjoy themselves, such as morning exercises and receiving professional manicures. Studio and one-bed apartments are available and staff provides all the assistance needed for residents struggling with activities of daily living, such as oral hygiene and dressing.
Windsor Estates Assisted Living
Windsor Estates sits conveniently close to the Youngstown-Pittsburgh Road, which should make it more accessible for visitors, while being far enough away to not suffer noise pollution. It backs on to a residential estate and has plenty of manicured lawns with walkable paths, so seniors can get as much exercise as they need. Inside the building, there's a library, chapel, club room and beauty salon/barbershop, each serving residents' social, spiritual and personal needs. Meals are served in the dining room and visitors can eat with their loved ones in the private dining room.
Nestled within a residential area, Clen-Moore Place is protected from view on three sides by tall, mature trees. It's also only minutes from retail stores, restaurants and UPMC Jameson Community Hospital. Other factors that help it make our list are the little things, such as the illuminated entries to the studio and one-bedroom apartments occupied by residents. For their health, the community organizes tai chi classes and other forms of exercise, and there's a garden where they can relax and take in the beauty of nature. Another thing we like that many seniors may appreciate is that Clen-Moore Place welcomes small pets.
Omni West Assisted Living
Families may appreciate Omni West Assisted Living's proximity to I-80 and I-680, as it should be easier for them to visit. The community is set within acres of landscaped grounds backing on to woodland, yet it's only 10 minutes from the conveniences of Youngstown's center. There's a full-service beauty salon/barbershop within the community, so seniors needn't travel for treatments, and there's a chapel, which holds regular religious services. Oak cabinets in the studio and one-bedroom apartments add a little bit of luxury, while the staff takes care of common household chores, including cleaning and laundry. They also help with activities of daily living.
Rhodes Estates is conveniently situated for easy access to New Castle's retail stores, restaurants, banks and churches. It provides 24/7 personal care services, such as help with eating and getting in and out of bed, and there's always a nurse nearby and transportation for medical appointments. Three freshly prepared meals are served every day in the dining room and housekeeping staff keep rooms clean and linens fresh, so families needn't worry about their loved ones' basic needs being met. Residents are encouraged to socialize and get involved, such as by watching sports together and baking cookies.
The Pines at Grove Manor
We've added The Pines at Grove Manor to our list because families may like that the community prioritizes its residents' independence. It doesn't have a one-size-fits-all approach, instead only providing the level of care the senior needs so they can retain as much of their independence as possible. Consequently, one resident may only need help with bathing, while another may need assistance with food or more. Residents are supervised 24/7 and staff will also help with managing their medications. Housekeeping staff clean residents' rooms and handle laundry for linens and clothing.
Wickshire Poland's location is beautiful and practical, as it sits within carefully landscaped grounds backing on to woodland, while also being only minutes from Poland's center. Families may appreciate its proximity to I-680, which makes it easier to visit the community. There are numerous styles of studio and one-bedroom apartments to choose from, each with kitchenettes and private bathrooms with walk-in showers. There's an arts and crafts studio on-site, so residents can realize their creative sides, as well as paths around the grounds where they can enjoy the beautiful scenery and get some exercise.
