Beaufort is recognized as one of the best retirement cities in the United States, and Southern Living named it The Best Southern Town in the nation. The city is situated on Port Royal Island, one of South Carolina’s Sea Islands. It has a large senior community that accounts for 19% of its population of 13,000 people, promoting access to age-friendly amenities and community-based services.

Beaufort offers a broad range of amenities, including locally owned shops and restaurants, scenic trails and sandy beaches, providing an engaging environment for retirement living. The city experiences warm summers and chilly winters, and its good air quality promotes seniors’ health. The region has more than a dozen medical facilities, including Beaufort Memorial Hospital within the city proper and Hilton Health Regional Medical Center on neighboring Hilton Head Island.

According to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey, seniors in the Beaufort region pay $4,500 per month for assisted living. This cost is about $900 more than South Carolina’s median rate of $3,612, but it’s equal to the national average.
