Situated near the Lake Keowee recreation area, along the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, Seneca offers a beautiful setting for aging adults seeking a peaceful yet lively community. The area’s year-round mild climate provides ample opportunities to explore nature’s bounty or participate in various recreational activities. Although Seneca experiences higher than average rainfall annually, it receives minimal snow.

Seneca seniors benefit from an overall cost of living of nearly 13% less than the national average. They also get some nice tax breaks, as the state doesn’t tax Social Security benefits. South Carolina also allows seniors aged 65 or older to exclude up to $10,000 of their retirement income, which doubles for joint filers.

Seneca is home to 8,900 residents; nearly a quarter are seniors aged 65 or older. Some older adults might benefit from an assisted living community’s supportive care when independent living ceases to be an option. Seneca’s average assisted living cost is $3,743 per month. Although it’s slightly more than the state average of $3,612, it’s significantly less than the national average of $4,500.
