What we loved most about this facility was the gracious architectural style that makes it resemble an old-school country manor, from the gambrel roofs to the spacious covered porches. Residents have the choice of studio, one- and two-bedroom units with kitchens or kitchenettes. The packed activities calendar includes tai chi, Wii Sports, lectures and discussions, arts and crafts, yoga and group outings to local restaurants, community events and nearby attractions. There are a number of resident-led clubs, such as book clubs, available for residents to join as well as educational opportunities such as computer classes.
Sunrise at Lynnfield
We included this facility on our top 10 list because of its holistic approach to senior care. We were particularly impressed with the Sunrise Live With Purpose™ program, which is designed to meet the physical, mental, spiritual needs of residents. The carefully curated activities calendar contains a wide range of options such as arts and crafts, group outings in the community van, live music, exercise classes and resident-led discussion and activity groups. Small pets are welcome at this facility, and we also loved that it has a resident cat and dog for those who enjoy them but don't want the responsibility of pet ownership.
Sunrise at Gardner Park
This facility's commitment to family engagement really stood out. We were particularly impressed with the family engagement app, which allows family members to see community announcements, menu selections in the restaurant-style dining room, check out the activities calendar and view videos and photos of their loved ones. The facility also hosts regularly scheduled meetings with residents and their families as well as social activities and educational programs designed specifically for families. Residents also have a variety of pet-friendly floor plans to choose from and a wide range of on-site amenities, including a wraparound porch with rocking chairs and well-appointed, spacious common areas.
The Residence at Pearl Street
With a resident capacity of 89, we thought this facility provided an ideal balance for those who prefer a more intimate living environment but still want to have the opportunity to make friends with a wide range of people. Along with studio, one- and three-bedroom apartments, there are companion suites for those who'd prefer not to live alone. Walking paths where residents can walk their small pets and relax on comfortable benches wind through the beautifully landscaped grounds. Wellness amenities include fitness classes, customized care plans and on-site health clinics.
The Residence at Melrose Station
The luxurious atmosphere of this pet-friendly facility reminded us of a five-star resort. We particularly liked the gourmet menu that nonetheless had a section designed especially for visiting grandchildren with a variety of kid-friendly options. The skilled culinary staff sources ingredients from local farmers and providers, and everything is prepared from scratch. There is also an on-site bistro for casual sandwiches and beverages and a private dining room where residents can enjoy special occasions with friends and family. Escorts to meals are available as well as in-room dining.
Atria Maplewood Place
This facility offers pet-friendly studio, one- and two-bedroom units with kitchens or kitchenettes and emergency alert systems. Staff members are on duty 24 hours per day, and housekeeping, personal laundry and linen services are available. The restaurant-style dining room serves three freshly prepared, nutritious and delicious meals a day, and diabetic, low-salt and vegetarian needs and preferences are happily accommodated by the kitchen staff. The facility also has an Anytime Cafe for residents who want to grab a bite outside of standard meal hours.
Landmark at Oceanview
Floor plans at this facility include studio, one- and two-bedroom units. All units have emergency calls systems, in-room cable, internet, and some have ocean views. Residents are able to provide the culinary staff with input about the meals at monthly dining forums. Along with personal care assistance, residents have access to an on-site pharmacy, visiting nurses, podiatry and occupational and physical therapy. Nurses are on duty 24 hours per day.
The Residence at Vinnin Square
This facility earned its place on our top 10 list because of its well-curated Engagement Program, which provides residents with a wide range of life enrichment activities and programs. Examples include flower arranging workshops, a New Yorker discussion group, tai chi, trivia competitions and wine tastings. With a resident capacity of 88, this is one of the smaller facilities on our list, which means classes and activities won't be crowded. Floor plans include studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments that residents are welcome to share with their small pets.

Indoor amenities include a wellness center, an activity and game lounge, a fitness room and a library. There is also a private dining room for residents to host personal celebrations. Overnight guests are also welcome.
