Melrose is an upscale community close to the heart of the greater Boston metro area. Home to over 29,000 people, nearly 19% of the area’s residents are seniors aged 65 and over. Melrose is a stone’s toss from the river, Harvard Yard and some of the best shopping and entertainment on the East Coast. Seniors may take special interest in the nearby reservoir and green space for casual strolls and outdoor recreational activities.

Melrose has a relatively high cost of living, which is offset by the exceptionally low local crime rate and easy access to world-class dining and shopping downtown. The community is close to Boston’s prestigious medical centers, including St. Elizabeth’s Medical Center and Boston Medical Center, both of which have advanced senior health services and accept Medicare and Medicaid.

The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey puts the average cost of assisted living in Melrose at $6,819 a month. This is $319 more each month than the $6,500 average seniors pay in Massachusetts at large, and both figures are well above the $4,500 national average cost for similar care. Assisted living prices drop precipitously farther west in the state, with seniors in Pittsfield paying an average of just $2,084 a month.

Note: Data for Melrose was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Boston, was used instead.

This guide lists 10 of the best assisted living communities in Melrose. Its aim is to help seniors and their loved ones pick a great place for them to live.
