Baton Rouge has the highest average home care cost in the state. In Houma, the cost is slightly less at $3,337 per month, while in Hammond it's $3,331 per month. Lafayette, Monroe and New Orleans all have an average monthly cost of $3,051 per month, which is just a few hundred dollars less than in Baton Rouge. Shreveport's assisted living cost is the lowest in the state at $2,860 per month, which is $572 less than in Baton Rouge.

The cost of adult day care in Baton Rouge is considerably higher than in other Louisiana cities. At $2,340 per month, the cost is nearly $500 higher than in Shreveport, which has the second highest adult day care costs in Louisiana. The lowest priced adult day care in the state can be found in Lafayette, where the average cost is $1,083 per month. In New Orleans, adult day care is priced just slightly higher at an average of $1,235 per month.

Nursing home care in Baton Rouge costs an average of $5,233 per month, which is mid-range when compared with other cities throughout Louisiana. The most expensive nursing home care in the state can be found in New Orleans, where the average cost is $5,627 per month. Seniors who are seeking a less expensive option for nursing home care may want to consider smaller cities, such as Monroe, where the average cost is only $4,563 per month.

Medicaid Program in Baton Rouge

Louisiana's Medicaid system provides seniors with several ways to pay for long-term care. The state plan covers the cost of nursing home care and personal care, as well as other necessary healthcare expenses, such as primary care, prescription medications and dental care. There are also several home and community-based service waivers available to seniors that require long-term care services that aren't covered under the state plan.

To qualify for the state Medicaid plan in Louisiana, seniors need to be at least 65 years old. Single applicants are required to have a maximum income of $771 per month and no more than $2,000 in countable assets. Married applicants are allowed an income of up to $1,157 per month and up to $3,000 in countable assets. The state plan is an entitlement program, which means there is no wait list and all eligible applicants receive services immediately.

Medicaid Waivers in Baton Rouge

Adult Day Health Care Waiver

The Adult Day Health Care waiver helps seniors who require a nursing level of care to access adult day health services in the community. Services include skilled nurse checks, personal care assistance, medication management and nutritional support including hot meals.

To qualify for this waiver applicants must undergo a care assessment and it must be determined that they require a nursing level of care. Asset limits are the same as for the state Medicaid plan while income limits are slightly higher. Applicants are allowed a maximum monthly income of $2,313. This program is open to a limited number of beneficiaries, which means that some seniors may be placed on a wait list before they're granted coverage.

Community Choices Waiver

The Community Choices waiver helps senior citizens to age in place by providing a variety of services in the community. The waiver covers a wide array of expenses that include personal assistance services, nursing services, transition services and medical supplies.

Eligibility requirements for this waiver are the same as for the Adult Day Health Care Waiver. The Community Choices waiver is only open to a limited number of participants and seniors may be added to a wait list before they're eligible to receive coverage.

Louisiana's PSH program helps senior citizens and low-income individuals throughout the state access affordable housing and care. Participants of this program must receive care in a licensed personal care home, some of which  provide assisted living and personal care services.
