Gaithersburg is situated about 23 miles northwest of the District of Columbia in Montgomery County and has nearly 70,000 residents, making it one of the most populous cities in Maryland. It has a senior community that represents nearly 12% of its residents.

The affluent community of Gaithersburg offers low crime rates and a relatively comfortable climate, making it a prime option for active retirees. It’s home to a thriving senior center and over two dozen parks, along with several large shopping malls. The city also provides easy access to some of the best hospitals in the state, including Adventist Healthcare Shady Grove Medical Center in Rockville and Holy Cross Germantown Hospital in Germantown.

The Genworth 2020 Cost of Care Survey shows that older adults in the Gaithersburg region pay $6,000 per month on average for assisted living, which is higher than the national and statewide medians for this type of care. Even so, Gaithersburg is more affordable than the California area, where the average cost of assisted living is $6,200.
