Muskogee is a compact and rustic city on the banks of the Arkansas River. It can be a fine retirement location for those looking to avoid the madding crowds but be within minutes of social, cultural and medical amenities. The city has enough coffee shops, restaurants and retail stores to satisfy most seniors, as well as several other attractions, such as a speedway and a casino. Seniors wanting more amenities are less than an hour’s drive northwest of Tulsa’s attractions.

The 65+ age group comprises almost 15% of the city’s 37,000 residents. They benefit from Muskogee’s very low cost of living and one of Oklahoma’s more senior-friendly climates. Muskogee’s older residents also profit from not having their Social Security benefits taxed and their public and private pension incomes only partially taxed.

Genworth’s 2021 Cost of Care Survey is the most authoritative source of senior living costs in the country. It reveals that Muskogee’s median monthly fee for assisted living equals Oklahoma’s norm of $3,855 while being significantly more affordable than the U.S. average of $4,500.

Note: Data for Muskogee was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Tulsa, was used instead
