Just across the bridge from Louisville and on the banks of the Ohio River is Jefferson, IN. Jefferson offers residents the best of both worlds; the area is large enough to provide the conveniences of city living, yet it’s small enough to offer the comforts of quiet neighborhoods. Locals may enjoy learning the rich history of Jefferson, thanks to the several historic museums, tours and sites. Magnificent river views and the Louisville night skyline make a charming backdrop for the town. The area is also home to several recreational parks, waterfront leisure spots and local eateries.

The cost of living in Jefferson, at a rate 15% lower than the U.S. average, is attractive to older residents living on a fixed or limited income. Retirees can enjoy the river scenery, volunteer programs and senior activity centers in the area. Jefferson is located near world-class hospitals, including the University of Louisville Health and Clark Memorial, meaning that every type of medical specialist can be found just a few miles away.

Using the Unworthy 2021 Cost of Care Survey to determine and compare average assisted living costs, Jefferson is considerably lower than other areas in Indiana. Jefferson comes in at $3,500 a month, which is $889 less than the $4,389 seniors pay for the same level of care in nearby Evansville and $783 lower than the Indiana state average of $4,283. When compared to the U.S. national average cost of $4,500 for assisted living, Jefferson is $1,000 lower per month.
