Hockessin is a residential community wedged against Delaware’s northern border where it curves in an arc against the rolling farmland of eastern Pennsylvania. Home to 13,500 people, more than 22% are seniors aged 65 and over. It boasts a senior center, several golf courses and moderate hiking trails.

The area has a high cost of living, but the low local crime rate and mild, sunny weather help make it worth the expense. Shopping and entertainment venues are located in Wilmington and Philadelphia, and Atlantic City, New Jersey, is a charter bus ride away. Several local hospitals offer focused care for older adults, such as ChristianaCare Wilmington Hospital and Chester County Hospital, both of which accept Medicare and Medicaid.

The 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey puts the average cost of assisted living in Hockessin at $5,685 per month. This is $1,185 higher than the national average of $4,500, though it’s competitive with nearby cities such as Trenton, NJ, where costs average $8,145, or Ocean City, which costs $7,490 for similar care.

Note: Data for Hockessin was unavailable, so data for the nearest city, Philadelphia, was used instead.

This guide lists our picks for the top 10 assisted living communities in and around Hockessin, DE. It’s intended to help seniors and their loved ones find the right place to settle down.
