Oak Harbor exudes an authentic charm and boasts miles of stunning shoreline filled with dining, shopping, cultural and recreational opportunities. Its lovely scenery, clean air and peaceful environment often appeal to seniors looking for a relaxing community nestled on Whidbey Island, about two hours north of Seattle.

Although Oak Harbor’s overall cost of living is slightly higher than the national average by about 5%, health costs are about 8% lower, benefiting seniors with ongoing health issues. Prescription drugs, another potentially large expense for aging adults, are state sales tax exempt and only charged 2.2% locally. Retired adults also financially benefit from Washington’s lack of personal income taxes. Social Security benefits, pensions and other retirement income go further without taxes taken out.

Oak Harbor has less than 25,000 residents, including nearly 3,000 seniors aged 65 or older. Aging adults who are still reasonably self-sufficient but need a higher level of care than independent living provides may enjoy assisted living. The average assisted living cost in Oak Harbor is $5,500. Seniors save $500 per month compared to the state average of $6,000 but pay $1,000 more than the national average.
