Mechanicsville is a bedroom community located northeast of the Virginia state capital city of Richmond. Home to 39,000 people, more than 18% of Mechanicsville’s residents are seniors aged 65 and over. The large local population of older adults makes Mechanicsville a relatively safe and inviting place for many seniors, while the proximity to the capital and Washington D.C. brings world-class shopping and entertainment within a few minutes’ drive.

Mechanicsville has a deep and rich history dating back to early Colonial times. Today, the city still has a main street clustered with the red-brick public buildings common to the Founding era. Seniors have plenty of opportunities to explore the city on foot since this region gets relatively little snow in winter and enjoys very mild summers in most years. There is a thriving local arts scene and many excellent hospitals and medical centers nearby that accept new patients with Medicare.

Assisted living costs an average of $4,901 a month in Mechanicsville, according to the 2021 Genworth Cost of Care Survey. This is $349 a month less than the Virginia average cost for similar care of $5,250. Nationwide, seniors pay an average of $4,500 for assisted living.
