The Senior Rx Program is Nevada’s state pharmaceutical assistance program designed for elderly individuals. The program provides financial assistance for prescription drugs for both Medicare and non-Medicare eligible Nevada residents. Individuals that are eligible for Medicare must enroll in a Medicare Part D plan, which will enable them to receive assistance for the monthly premiums and for medication co-payments. Persons ineligible for Medicare receive direct assistance towards the cost of their prescriptions.
This program is managed by the Nevada Department of Health and Human Services and is funded by the proceeds from the tobacco settlements with the state. It is intended as a financial supplement to Medicare Part D (for those of Medicare eligible age). The program is the secondary payer after the participant's Medicare plan.
To be eligible for this program, applicants must meet the following criteria:
Residency – Candidates must be a legal Nevada resident. Unlike many assistance programs, SeniorRX has a duration of residency requirement. Newcomers to the state must wait one year to gain eligibility.
Age – Applicants must be a minimum of 62 years of age. Persons 65 and older must enroll or be enrolled in a Medicare Part D plan.
Income – For widowed, divorced or otherwise single applicants, the annual income limit is set at $28,709, which is equal to $2,392.42 per month. For married couples or two-person households, the annual income limit is $38,270, equal to $3,189.16 per month. Even if a spouse is not applying for the program, their income must be included on the application. Readers should be aware the income limits change annually but not at the start of the year. Instead revisions occur in July, this page was last updated Feb. 2018.
Medicaid Ineligible – Applicants cannot concurrently be eligible and receive assistance from Medicaid. This is because Medicaid beneficiaries receive other prescription benefits.
This program provides financial assistance for Medicare Part D premiums, co-payments, deductibles and gap coverage for the “donut” hole up to $5,100 / year. There is no charge to participate in this program. However, for those who are not Medicare eligible, there is a minimal co-payment for prescription medications.
