Virginia Adult Services (AS)

 What is the Virginia Adult Services program?
The Virginia Adult Services Program is designed to allow seniors who are at risk for nursing home placement to remain living at home or the home of a caregiver and receive services and care at those locations.  It is the program's intention to both save the state money by preventing the unnecessary institutionalization of individuals at the same time as increasing the quality of life of functionality impaired persons.  The program achieves these goals by supporting family caregivers and providing home care services. 

The Adult Services program allows for a degree of consumer direction, sometimes referred to as cash and counseling which means the participant has the ability to select their own care providers.  Friends and even family members can be hired as paid caregivers as long as they do not live with individual that requires care or are married to them.
 What are the Eligibility Criteria for the Adult Services Program?
To be eligible, Virginia residents must be assessed to have a need for nursing home care and meet the financial eligibility requirements.  This program is designed for low and middle income families however the financial eligibility criteria is not published and is believed to be determine at the local level.

 What Benefits are Provided as part of Virginia Adult Services?
A variety of care services are provided to Adult Service Program participants all of which are intended to increase the independence of the individual and help them to remain living at home or in their community.  These include:

-Assessments for assisted living facilities
-Adult day care
-Case management
-Chore services such as light home maintenance and yard work
-Companion services to assist individuals with transportation and shopping for essentials
-Homemaker services such as laundry and meal preparation
-Nutritional counseling
