In a manner similar to Children’s Day Care, Adult Day Care (ADC) provides elders with supervision and care in a structured setting during daytime hours allowing their caregivers to go to work. There are two types of Adult Day Programs. Adult Social Day Care offers basic health services, meals and activities while Adult Day Health Care (ADHC) provides intensive health services for individuals that might otherwise need to reside in a skilled nursing community. Many centers also offer transportation to and from the center.

Qualifications
All adult day cares are required to have a state license and are regulated to provide certain types of services. Most staff members have background checks and certifications. In addition many states regulate the staff-to-patient ratio and the minimum staff available at any time.

How They Work
Once you’ve determined your specific care requirements, contact a center by phone for an initial conversation matching your needs with their services. Most families then proceed to visit the center twice, first without the participant and then again with the participant. At that point, if all parties are comfortable, it is common to conduct a week-long trial of their services before making any longer term contractual agreement with the Adult Day Care center.
